Qualcomm, Google, Intel, and several other tech giants have established the UXL Foundation coalition to challenge Nvidia's AI market monopoly, which has propelled the company to a $2.2 trillion valuation.
This coalition intends to develop software that will give AI developers the flexibility to choose their preferred chips and software platforms. As it stands, Nvidia's software and chips constitute a closed ecosystem, compelling developers to rely on the company's offerings.

The outcome of the UXL Foundation's efforts is expected to be open-source software that operates on any computer, regardless of the hardware manufacturer. The initiative kicked off with Intel's OneAPI technology, an open-source standard that facilitates work with various types of hardware, including GPUs, AI chips, and FPGAs.
The first batch of technical specifications is anticipated for release in the first half of 2024, with a more enhanced and "mature" version promised by the end of the year by UXL leaders.
Looking ahead, the UXL Foundation plans to expand its initiative to include cloud computing service providers such as Amazon and Microsoft, as well as chip manufacturers.
