Echoing Musk: AI ‘Godfather’ Says It’s Dangerous
Not everyone is happy with AI’s fast-paced development. The omnipresence of AI-generated misinformation is just one of the many concerns.
A former Google employee, also known as the Godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton, had an honest talk with the New York Times.
He shared his thoughts about AI. However, they could be more optimistic, as he believes the technology poses a serious threat.
“I console myself with the normal excuse: If I hadn’t done it, somebody else would have,” Dr. Hinton told the NYT.
His main concern is that AI is a malicious tool for misinformation, flooding the web with fake pictures and the likes: “It is hard to see how you can prevent the bad actors from using it for bad things.”
Despite not signing the letter issued by 19 present and former leaders of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence cautioning about the perils of AI, Hinton acknowledges the validity of their apprehensions.
Dr. Hinton has stated that artificial intelligence has the potential to disrupt the job market, potentially supplanting paralegals, personal assistants, translators, and other individuals who perform routine tasks. “It takes away the drudge work,” he said. “It might take away more than that.”
However, the biggest, Musk-like fear that Dr. Hinton has is that future versions of the technology pose a threat to humanity because they often learn unexpected behavior from the vast amounts of data they analyze. Furthermore, since individuals and companies allow AI systems to generate and run their own computer code.
“And he fears a day when truly autonomous weapons—those killer robots—become reality,” the NYT writes.
“The idea that this stuff could actually get smarter than people—a few people believed that,” he said. “But most people thought it was way off, and I thought it was way off. I thought it was 30 to 50 years or even longer away. " "Obviously, I no longer think that.”
During the interview, it was noted that Microsoft and Google are in competition with each other. Microsoft has implemented a chatbot to enhance its Bing search engine, and now Google is striving to do the same. It is suggested that only worldwide regulations can effectively tackle this issue.
