From May 19 to 23, the EDCON 2023 conference (Ethereum Development Conference) was held in Podgorica, Montenegro. The event brought together the Ethereum community to discuss the future and current state of the ecosystem.
The highlight of EDCON 2023 for many was the presentation by Vitalik Buterin, which captured attention not only through his speech but also his unique attire. The Ethereum founder presented in a wizard's costume, primarily focusing on the technical challenges his blockchain is facing, namely scalability, privacy, and user security.

Implementing technologies

Buterin expressed concern about people primarily using centralized exchanges instead of decentralized ones, and showing more interest in tokens rather than the technologies brought by Ethereum.

L2-solutions

Addressing the scalability issue, the "wizard" admitted that Ethereum's scalability is indeed low, but noted that Layer2 technology is gradually solving this problem. He specifically mentioned second-layer networks such as Optimism, Arbitrum, Scroll, Taiko, and zkSync.

Stealth Addresses

Regarding confidentiality, Buterin discussed the use of "stealth addresses" to receive funds without revealing ENS names or wallet assets. However, he cautioned that complete anonymity could potentially be used for illegal activities like money laundering. To address this issue, a program is being developed that can help prove innocence without revealing identity.

ZK-SNARKS

As for user security, Buterin shared that he personally uses multisig mechanisms and social recovery to protect his wallet. He highlighted the role of ZK-SNARK technology, which offers security and confidentiality simultaneously.

It's worth noting that EDCON 2023 also welcomed many influential speakers like Tim Beiko, Skyler Weaver, and Barry Whitehat from the Ethereum Foundation. Among other famous figures were Sai Lee from the University of Ethereum, Eli Ben-Sasson from StarkWare, Sergey Nazarov from Chainlink, and Scott Moore from Gitcoin. The event comprised community-oriented seminars, educational and outdoor recreational activities, all showcasing the vibrant spirit of collaboration within the global Ethereum community.
