After nearly five months, the Writers Guild’s strike has officially concluded with a tentative deal that includes provisions on AI usage in Hollywood. The strike, which focused on issues like higher wages and fairer contracts, also revolved around AI practices and implementation.
Under the agreed-upon terms:

  • AI cannot write or rewrite literary material.
  • AI-generated material will not be considered source material.
  • AI-generated material cannot undermine a writer’s credit.

Additionally, the deal allows writers to choose to use AI with the company’s consent and adherence to company policies. However, companies cannot mandate the use of AI software like ChatGPT for writing services.

Ellen Stutzman, a WGA leader, noted that AI terms were previously non-negotiable for studios before the strike.
