Telegram Almost Ready to Auction Unique Usernames
Telegram has delivered on its idea to create a marketplace for trading NFT-like unique usernames on the platform.
Telegram is almost done creating a marketplace for buying and selling unique and recognizable usernames.
According to the latest announcement, the auction platform will be launched soon.
“Make sure you don't miss your chance to acquire the most valuable usernames and secure your ownership of them in the TON blockchain’s immutable ledger,” the message reads.
In late August, we reported that CEO of Telegram Pavel Durov suggested creating a new marketplace that could be used to buy and sell “catchy t.me addresses like @storm or @royal, and all four-letter usernames,” including @bank, @club, @game, @gift, etc.
He was impressed by the TON DNS auction, which prompted him to float the idea of putting reserved @ usernames, group, and channel links for auction with ownership secured on the blockchain via NFT-like smart contracts.
Back then, he added that elements of Telegram’s ecosystem such as channels, stickers, or emojis, could later also become part of this marketplace.
TON was originally created as a means of facilitating digital payments on Telegram. However, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) opposed the initiative, taking the company to court for an unregistered preliminary sale of $1.7 billion of Gram tokens.
Most recently, Telegram was also fined €5.125 million for failing to comply with Germany’s law on social media. In particular, the app failed to set up a complaints management system and has not named a person in Germany authorized to receive information requests from law enforcement authorities.
Previously, Gagarin News reported that Japan’s National Police Agency reported cyberattacks launched by the Lazarus Group. The culprits, supported by North Korean authorities, were targeting crypto exchanges.
