Sunak Wants to Bring Together Like-minded AI States
The UK is looking to take the reins in all things AI-related. The British PM’s new statements only serve to underscore that.
Last week, UK PM Rishi Sunak visited President Joe Biden in Washington D.C. where he talked about his ambition to turn the UK into a power broker when it comes to the development of AI regulation.
According to British officials, the country is “well-placed” to hold talks on how to regulate the industry. Not least because of Brexit, the UK’s decision to leave the European Union in 2016.
This move has reportedly enabled the U.K. to act quickly in response to a rapidly changing market, helping create regulation that is in between the “strict” EU regulations and the “lighter” touch U.S. approach.
The potential venue could bring together the “like-minded” countries. This includes all G7 countries. Russia, which continues its aggression in Ukraine, and China are reportedly not on the list.
According to Sunak, AI has “an incredible potential to transform our lives”. However, he also acknowledges that there is “the need to make sure it is developed and used in a way that is safe and secure.”
He also suggested that in principle he would be content for robots “to teach his children or care for his grandmother.”
The British PM also refuted the idea that the country is too small to host such a conference. He added that the government is trying to put “guardrails” in place and thus consider the growing concerns from a host of AI actors. They include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.
