The developers said on their page on the social network Twitter that the Ethereum client OpenEthereum is no longer supported. According to them, work on the project was stopped since Ethereum will eventually switch to the PoS algorithm.
On their page on social networks, the developers published the history of OpenEthereum, which was created in 2015 and has been used to create “clients” and software used to interact with the entire Ethereum network. Each user could create an Ethereum node and mine cryptocurrency. OpenEthereum operated on a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism. The developers said that the client codebase has become cumbersome and difficult to manage and maintain over the past seven years.
The usefulness and necessity of this software have already become irrelevant. Now it’s the best time to end client support and prepare for a fresh start. We are looking forward to a new stage,
- said the developers of the client.
Earlier, Ethereum co-founder Vitaliy Buterin noted that by the end of this summer, a transition from the PoW consensus mechanism to Proof-of-Stake is quite likely.
This transition will be the most complex and large-scale in the history of Ethereum. Owing to this upgrade, the network will become completely “green” and will not consume such an amount of electricity. Also, due to the transition to the PoS algorithm, obtaining ETH using video cards and ASIC miners will be obsolete, and this will significantly reduce mining costs. Almost everyone will be able to participate in ETH mining - from advanced users to ordinary owners of computers and smartphones. The only problem is that in the new algorithm, the chance to get a coin will be higher for someone who already has more cryptocurrency on the account.
