LBP as a New Form of Token Sale: How Does It Work?

Liquidity Bootstrapping Pools present an innovative approach to Initial DEX Offerings (IDOs), where projects ensure immediate liquidity for a trading pair, allowing the coin's price to adjust naturally based on trading dynamics.
Cryptocurrency platform Balancer pioneered the concept of LBP, establishing a new protocol for facilitating Liquidity Bootstrapping Pools. However, Balancer is not the sole platform offering this feature.

Let's dissect the LBP token sale process and assess the benefits and drawbacks of such IDOs.

LBP Token Sale Procedure

Most traditional IDO/ICOs are conducted at a fixed token price. Meanwhile, the coin is only listed on exchanges after the final sale round, and all coins are distributed among investors.

The LBP token sale unfolds across multiple phases:

  • Liquidity Allocation: Tokens are listed on a designated platform (e.g., Balancer), with another form of cryptocurrency (commonly, a stablecoin) injected into the trading pair.
  • Sale Specifications: Determining the token's initial price, the duration of the sale, and the token-collateral ratio.
  • Trading Commencement: The sale typically kicks off at a peak price, gradually decreasing as buyers accumulate, forming a substantial support pool.
  • Token Distribution: Following the sale, tokens are directly transferred to investors' cryptocurrency wallets, bypassing any lock-in period.
  • LBP Conclusion: This phase is reached once the token sale duration concludes or the token pool is depleted.

LBPs offer a flexible pricing mechanism, accommodating the coin's value fluctuation, suggesting a segmented purchase strategy might be more prudent.

LBP Advantages

  1. Enables token sale participation without the need for launchpad registrations or token staking.
  2. Guarantees immediate access to 100% of the coins upon listing.
  3. Reduces coin volatility, minimizing price manipulation risks.
  4. Ensures a high level of liquidity.

LBP Challenges

  1. Potential for unequal token distribution among participants due to operational freedom.
  2. Risks of overpaying for the coin due to fluctuating prices.
  3. The liquidity provision requirement may pose a challenge for smaller projects.

Successful Projects Launched via LBP

Several projects have successfully entered the market following an LBP. Among these protocols is Tidal Finance (TIDAL).

This project launched its own token in March 2021, and post-LBP, the asset's price increased fivefold.

Other successful examples of LBP include the cryptocurrency projects Indexed Finance (NDX) and Connext (CNX), whose sales occurred in 2020.

However, unfortunately, most tokens launched in the Liquidity Bootstrapping Pool format experience a negative trend, often due to a lack of demand for the assets or dishonest teams beginning to sell their own coins during the LBP, which can quickly devalue the token for all participants.

Major Platforms for Liquidity Bootstrapping Pools

Dynamic LBPs can be conducted on platforms such as:

  • Uniswap;
  • Curve Finance;
  • Bancor;
  • Miso;
  • Fjord.

Final Words

LBPs represent a highly specific type of token sale that requires significant liquidity and proper organization. However, with quality analysis of crypto projects, such IDOs can yield decent results and offer the opportunity to more effectively manage one's assets by setting an acceptable level of risk.
