AI Scandal Rocks the Web Again
AI-generated images cause major controversy as concerns about technology's true utility gather pace.
Amnesty International’s attempt to draw attention to the 2021 Colombian protests did not end up well.
Instead of using well-documented pictures and other methods to demonstrate police brutality, it used artificial intelligence (AI).

The AI-generated picture shows a woman detained by Colombian police.
Although the picture has a somewhat artificial aura to it – the characters’ faces look immaculate, the tricolor carried by the protester has the wrong order of colors, and the police uniform is outdated – the human rights advocacy group received backlash on Twitter.
The AI generated image has once again raised concerns about AI. Not least as it could also jeopardize Amnesty’s reputation and work and feed conspiracy theories.
Erika Guevara Rosas, director for the Americas at Amnesty International, confirmed that the organization had removed the controversial image.
“We are living in a highly polarized era full of fake news, which makes people question the credibility of the media. And as we know, artificial intelligence lies. What sort of credibility do you have when you start publishing images created by artificial intelligence?” said Juancho Torres, a photojournalist based in Bogotá.
Recently, a former Google employee also known as the Godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton expressed concern that AI indeed poses a threat to societies, including due to fake pics.
