Ordinals developers have introduced a method called «Recursive inscriptions» to overcome the 4 MB per block size limitation that has traditionally restricted the size of NFTs.
By utilizing recursive inscriptions, efficiency can be improved and costs reduced. Rather than individually inscribing numerous JPEG files for a profile picture (PFP) collection, developers can instead inscribe the collection’s traits and employ small amounts of code in subsequent inscriptions to programmatically generate the images, potentialy saving on transaction fees.

Previously, inscriptions representing tokens and NFTs on Bitcoin operated independently without knowledge of one another. With the new update, inscriptions can now reference the content of other inscriptions using a special syntax.

Recursive inscriptions could lead to use cases including complex 3D video games, where each part of the game’s code could be stored in different inscriptions.
Additionally, it unlocks new possibilities for creating an internal internet within Bitcoin. Ordinal marketplaces and explorers can serve as Bitcoin web browsers, allowing users to browse the blockchain and explore its dynamic ecosystem.
